On our weekend trip up into the San Bernardino Mountains, K was horrified when I announced that we'd be taking NO toys.
'Buuuuutttttt, whaaaaatt will I plaaaaaayyyyy wiiiiiitttthhhh?' she wailed.
'We'll make our own toys', I answered.
So, on our first day up in the wilderness, we set to work making a Forest Fairy.
All we needed to make this wonderful toy, was a peg, sticky tape and some twine. K and T picked two lovely green oak leaves and we set to making our fairy.
K was amazed that she could make a beautiful toy so easily. Oak Fairy has come home with us and is a firm favourite. She announced this morning that her 'wings' were looking a little droopy and has set out into the garden to find fresh ones for her. I enjoy showing K that toy's really don't only come from the store, but are even more abundant in creative minds.

I just love your way of thinking! And love that she made a fairy friend that is now a favorite (droopy wings or not)...and how nice that you can replace them by searching the backyard.

What a wonderful lesson for your children to learn, that toys don't always have to come from stores. Love the Forest Fairy.

Thats what I used do as child.
I grew up in a huge garden. I made things out of rocks, seedpods, plants, leaves, flowers any thing I could get my hands on. :) My brother used to tease me he would say to his mates "She talks to them, she thinks they people. " and laugh at me, but that what are big brothers do LOL.
I love seeing my kids playing the same way in the garden like I used to do as a child.

Very sweet. I wish my children were still of an age when they wanted to make such things. Last summer we had good luck with making games from nature. I have to think hard for our upcoming camping trip.

we dip leaves in beeswax in the fall. this would be fun to then with all the autumn colors! thanks for the great idea! ;)
