How to Make an Acorn Man.

It is a necessity to take 'magic eyes' on a camping trip. We call these 'magic eyes' as just about anything can be turned into an enchanting creature with these sweet little things.
Sticks were a favourite on our recent camping adventure. K and her friend turned some ordinary looking sticks into an army of stick-men...
Here are 'Mr Grumpy' and 'Mr Oh-My-Gosh'.
Here's 'Mr Happy'.
Posted by PicasaHere's Miss Smiley and her acorn friend.

Here's Mr T and his stick friend.
Here's 'Mrs Pine Needle'.
And here is the entire army!
Posted by PicasaAmazing that a little packet of sticky-eyes can create such an assortment of creatures. Don't forget to take some with you on your next camping adventure.

Making a Forest Fairy.

On our weekend trip up into the San Bernardino Mountains, K was horrified when I announced that we'd be taking NO toys.
'Buuuuutttttt, whaaaaatt will I plaaaaaayyyyy wiiiiiitttthhhh?' she wailed.
'We'll make our own toys', I answered.
So, on our first day up in the wilderness, we set to work making a Forest Fairy.
All we needed to make this wonderful toy, was a peg, sticky tape and some twine. K and T picked two lovely green oak leaves and we set to making our fairy.
We positioned the leaves about a third of the way up the peg for wings. Then stuck them into place with sticky-tape.
Then we covered the 'ugly' sticky tape with the twine and tied it into place.
And, Voila! An enchanting Oak Fairy.
K was amazed that she could make a beautiful toy so easily. Oak Fairy has come home with us and is a firm favourite. She announced this morning that her 'wings' were looking a little droopy and has set out into the garden to find fresh ones for her. I enjoy showing K that toy's really don't only come from the store, but are even more abundant in creative minds.

Camping

We packed up our camper for a weekend trip into the San Bernardino Mountains.
Mr T spent the whole journey posting money from his bucket into his Minnie piggie bank. We think he might grow up to be a banker.
It was a 6000 ft climb. The scenery was breathtaking.
The mountains are a child's paradise... dirt and dust everywhere...
Logs to jump off...
Posted by PicasaBirds to spot...
Trees to run through...
Camping chairs to sit in...
Tents to play in...
Marbles to play with...

Not surprisingly, there were two tired little children on our journey home yesterday...

K declared our weekend her 'best days ever!'

Needle Felting - Daisy the Cow.

Poor little Lilly the Lamb. She was lonely. 'What's wrong?' we asked. 'I need a friend.' she replied tentatively. So,we made her a friend... Daisy the Cow.
Daisy's best friend is Tilly the Toadstool and they chat and play all day long.
Daisy lives in a green meadow with buttercups, rocks, a pond and a strawberry bush laden with juicy red strawberries.
Her red barn is very cozy, don't you think?

Lilly and Daisy are very happy to be friends.

Gnomes Galore on Etsy!

Etsy, our handmade wonderland, has an application whereby members can put together a list of items they love. This list posts to Etsy's Treasury page. Now, it's very difficult to secure a spot in the Treasury as so many members participate. One can only secure a post when the lists drop to below 333. As there are usually 500 - 600 lists when I look, I haven't been able to post a Treasury list... UNTIL today!!

I looked on the treasury page and there were only 332 lists... I couldn't believe my eyes! My heart skipped a beat... I pressed the 'Make Your Own Treasury List' button... and... Voila! I had my very own list.

I made a collection of Gnomes and called it 'Gnomes Galore!!!'

Here is the link, pop on over to have a look at these handmade gnomely treasures.

Water Painting.

I enjoyed watching my little one exploring with painting with water. He filled his little cup from the pool and walked around the yard, seeing the color changes he could make on natural things with water and his paintbrush. He started on our balance beam branch and painted it with his water until just about the whole brach was a lovely dark brown.

He moved on to the stump table and painted along the lines of the cracks, turning them into a dark black.
He lined up his stones and painted each one,
delighting in the streaks of yellow and ivory that appeared and the grey of the wet rocks.
Amazing to see that all a little boy needs to paint is water and a paintbrush.

Look here to see a natural wonder of the world.

Homemade Butter.

There was once a sweet family who lived in a big city; a mom and a dad and a little girl and a little boy.

One day, they went to the farmers market as this is where families who live in a big city can find fresh fruit and veggies. The farmers market was full of red nectarines, juicy cherries and pretty white cauliflowers. But the thing that caught the little girl's attention, was the wholesome, sweet smell of freshly baked bread. She was delighted when her dad said she could choose whichever loaf she wanted.
'Oh!' she exclaimed happily, 'when we get home we can have warm bread and butter for lunch.' She smiled broadly as fresh bread and butter was one of her favourite treats.

Alas, when the family arrived home and unpacked the warm bread for lunch, the mommy realised that she had forgotten to buy butter from the supermarket the day before.
The little girl began to cry. 'But I waaaaaaaaaant bread and butter!' she lamented.
'Don't cry' said her clever mom. 'Butter doesn't only come from the supermarket' she explained. She knew this because when she was a little girl, she had lived on a dairy farm, and she could remember how her granny had made butter from fresh cream. Luckily the mom had not forgotten to get cream from the supermarket the day before and knew that there was a fresh jar in the fridge.
'I'll teach you how to make butter from cream, just like my granny taught me', the mommy told her daughter.

This is what they did. They collected a clean jar with a lid, two clean marbles and the fresh cream from the fridge.
The little girl put the cream and then the two marbles into the jar and the mommy closed the lid tightly.
Then they took turns shaking the jar. This was hard work but the mommy told the little girl that their hard work would be worth the delicious butter. At first the marbles made a clanking sound as they were shaken with the cream.
But then the cream thickened and the little girl could no longer hear the sound of the marbles. 'This is a good sign' her mother told her. 'It means that our cream is becoming butter. When you hear the marbles again, it will mean that our cream has turned to butter.' The little girl shook the jar diligently and listened for the sound of the marbles.
Suddenly she heard them. The unmistakable 'clank, clank' as they hit against the side of the jar. And, looking at the jar, she saw that the cream had separated into yellow butter and while buttermilk.
'It's butter!' she cried.
The mom smiled as she poured the buttermilk into a glass and then spooned the freshly made butter into a dish.
She was sure not to forget to extract the two marbles from the butter as she wouldn't want one of her precious children to swallow them!
Then she took the glass of buttermilk and shared it between the four of them. It was the little boy who liked it the best.
In fact, it was the best drink he had ever tasted and he drank the whole glass clean.

The mom spread their freshly made butter onto their fresh bread and passed it around her family for lunch.
The little girl was so very happy and ate 4 slices!
'Yum!' she said. 'So, butter doesn't come from the supermarket, it comes from cream!' she sang and her mother smiled. However, her mother's smile faulted a little when she heard her daughter continue, 'and cream comes from the supermarket!'
