Discovering Waldorf is a weekly series of articles written by 'everyday' Waldorf families. The contributors to this series share their 'real-life' insights and inspirations on all kinds of Waldorf topics. This series is not meant to be Waldorf philosophy in its purest form, but rather a snapshot of how we can all incorporate Waldorf ideas into our lives to help nurture and encourage the magic that is in our children. Our family is sick again! We have the flu and a horrid one at that... a wracking cough, sore ears, sore throat and stuffy noses and sinuses... sound familiar? It's been a bad sickness season here in SoCal! So, as I 'm taking things easy this week, I though it would be a good time to re-post Samantha's article on illness.

Please welcome Samantha. I know I'm not alone in dreading the common sickness that winter (and Spring) brings and it is at around this time of year that I start to frantically research how to keep my family healthy through the 'sniffle' season. Samantha has some pretty wonderful help for us...

(Samantha is not a doctor. Please research fully, any medical care you administer to your family)

::Illness and Natural Remedies::
By Our Waldorf Home Mama: Samantha

This is a great time of year to talk about illness and traditional Waldorf treatments. Between colds mid-October, to the full-blown flu in January, there are many types of little bugs that make our little wee ones sick and miserable! Fortunately, a lot of the common illnesses our littles get, can be safely and gently cured in the comforts of our cozy homes.

Rudolf Steiner, a wonderfully dedicated scientist, esoteric spiritualist and founder of the amazing Waldorf education, concluded that illness is not random or even from simply catching a bug from another person, but could be linked to a much larger picture in life (or in his studies, past lives) he believes that the the human body must be treated three-fold. Physically, mentally and spiritually, the whole body is treated and thus creates a faster recovery and perhaps shorter and milder versions of future illnesses.

Anthroposophy, Steiner's religion is a foundation for all things Waldorf. Within this belief system, Anthroposophy looks at the world both spiritually and physically and concludes that certain ways of living can lesson or stop certain illnesses from developing. Health runs the gamut, from Demeter certified farms (biodynamic) to the use of homeopathy, herbs, curative eurethmy and even planet alignment all contribute to ones health and well being.

So what can we Waldorf mamas do for our little ones without getting all caught up in Steiner's studies and beliefs? Well it's simple, whatever illness may come should be treating gently with love, and understanding of conventional as well as alternative treatments for each individual case. Anthroposophical doctors are first MD's and second trained in Anthroposophical medicine--- which means when applicable antibiotics will be used, and other times herbs.

Waldorf does not reject conventional medicine as some may believe but instead uses appropriate treatments. For our little ones, prevention is key with hand washing and keeping littles home when sick. But other things, things we may not even think of, all help to keep our wee ones healthy... things like drinking lot's of water and keeping the child warm. If the child is warm the body can concentrate on higher forces within, thus spending less time warming it's self up and more time healing and recovering. Hats traditionally should be used on little children up until the age of five, even inside. Tinctures, homeopathy, and syrups can be used when needed. My personal belief is not to rule out the use of Tylenol or other pain relief to help the child through a period of heightened discomfort. Teas and decoctions can be used especially in the Winter time as they are very warming to the child, as well as at bedtime.

A simple tea made of Chamomile, Red Raspberry Leaf, Lavender and perhaps Valerian root makes a wonderful sleepy time tea. Even warmed milk and honey can nourish a sick child's soul when prepared with love. Plenty of rest and even surrounding the child in warm colors can do wonders for an upset little person! Putting up a play silk on the t.v. the radio, or paintings with harsh colors bring harmony to the child's inner chaos.

When necessary, my children see a doctor, especially when my natural and gentle treatments have failed.

Having a sick child is never fun, but, with understanding and love, a child can be supported through an illness and remain stronger afterward.

Thank you for sharing the methods you use to help prevent sickness and promote healing in your family, Samantha. We do much the same in our family.

The Story of a Treasure

Being on the vintage trail and constantly seeking out vintage treasures for my DovieMoon Etsy Shop I am often totally intrigued by the history of something I find. Everything has a story... somebody once loved it enough to make it, buy it, gift it, keep it. I find such charming things... trinkets that I can't believe someone doesn't love enough to keep. I find such funny things... things that I can't but wonder who gave it to whom, and why? I find beautiful things that must have been cherished heirlooms and sweet things that only a few of us think are cute. Kitty loves many of the things I love and then she loves many things that I don't really like so much either. A Good Man loves many of the things I love too but I'm not that into the old tools and 'man' things that tend to draw his attention. Teddy only loves swords and things that belonged to Dragons and I kind of love those things too. We all love some of the same things and we all love different things also. It's so interesting to me to find out why we love something... why it finds a place in our hearts, why it becomes cherished and loved and passed down from generation to generation.

These sentiments are the inspiration behind 'The Story of a Treasure' meme... each week (for a while, anyway) I'm going to show you something I have that I love and tell you the story behind why I love it. In thinking of the things I have that are deeply special to me, I realize that I love each one for a very different reason. I think it's going to be fun to explore the history of my treasures and I know it's going to be wonderful one day for Kitty and Teddy to know why I loved the little thing that they new own. I hope you will play along too. I invite you to explore your own treasures and post the histories behind your things on your own blogs. Each week, I'll add a link-up for you to share your special treasures on The Magic Onions. You can play along each week or just once in a while or, you can just enjoy reading about why we love the things we have.
Enjoy!

Here is the treasure we want to share with you this week. We found it at a garage sale about two years ago and it has hung in Kitty's room ever since. We bought it for a dollar... yes, a dollar!

It is a needle point of the sweetest forest scene... Kitty and I have spent hours lying in her bed making up all kinds of stories for the little animals in the picture. It has brought us wonderful imaginings together that I, and I'm sure she too, will cherish forever.

And, to top it all off, Kitty's beloved Granny from South Africa was with us at the time we found it... it was actually Granny who saw it first!

We look at all the stitches so lovingly placed and know that somebody spent many hours making this treasure for us and we thank them often, even though we don't know who they are.

I so enjoyed leaning about the treasures you linked to last week and I wanted to share them here. Click on the links to read more about each treasure.

This is Suzy's treasure. It is a beautifully wrapped little gift from her mom and the note reads...

Whenever you are lonely or even feeling blue, You only have to hold this gift... And know I think of you! You never can unwrap it, please leave the ribbon tied Just hold the box close to your heart It's filled with love inside!

Are your eyes stinging with tears? Yes, mine are too :-)
I will remember this for when my own little chicks are ready to fly from my nest.

Arianne shared a whole host of treasures with us. How could this little guy not be a treasure?

Valerie shared her utterly darling, vintage, toy cooking set that reminds her of her Grandparents.

Anya shared her husband's beautiful stamp collection with us. I know that my brother, who has a totally wonderful childhood stamp collection too, is going to drool over this one :-) Love ya Al.

Thanks for sharing, Gals... I would treasure your treasures too :-)

I look forward to seeing this weeks collection of treasures. So, link up, Dudes.

The Prettiest Easter Eggs.

We have been making beautiful heirloom eggs to decorate hour home for Easter. This craft makes such pretty eggs... we used transfers to color our eggs beautifully.

All we needed was white blown egg shells (tutorial on how to safely do this is here) and transfers that we found at a craft store... both the rub-on's and the transfers that need to be dampened with a wet cloth will work.

Kitty and Teddy chose which images they wanted for their eggs and cut neatly around the edges.

We used rub-on's and they worked wonderfully, sticking nicely to the naturally porous egg shells.

It was a gift to watch the delight on my children's faces as their eggs got prettier and prettier.

Happy Easter crafting!

Please welcome Karen who runs a Waldorf inspired playschool from her home. Karen shares the journey of how she found the courage to implement Waldorf philosophies and traditions into her daily activities with the children she cares.

* * *

I learnt about Waldorf education and lifestyle a few years back and immediately knew it would be right for my future children. I connect so deeply with the love of nature, natural materials and the gentle way it nurtures hands, heads and hearts.

sorting and washing crystals- a favourite activity in my daycare

In the meantime I have been running my home day care. Right from the start four years ago, I dreamed of a Waldorf inspired approach but felt self conscious that people might consider it too 'hippy' as there are no Waldorf schools anywhere nearby. I went with the 'safe' option and modeled the play area on plastic filled child-care centers that I had worked at. It didn't speak to my heart but I got enough business to keep me busy and enjoyed my work none the less. I did some 'not too hippyish' Waldorf activities, baking bread and enjoying nature with the children, with dreams of some day moving closer to a Waldorf school where I could feel safe and accepted for the way I wanted to be caring for children .

baking day

One day a few years later my day care playroom was overcrowded by plastic toys. Looking after the planet is important to me, I clean my home with vinegar and bi-carb soda, garden organic veggies, reduce, reuse, recycle and avoid plastics around my home. It just didn't feel right having all these plastic toys just because I didn't have the courage to introduce change.

It took a week for me to put everything except a few wooden toys and natural dolls into another room. I decided that I would recycle anything the children didn't ask for. The funny thing is, to this day only one or two favourite toys have ever been asked for. Children don't need nearly as much 'stuff' as we sometimes think. The children came in, played with what was there and that was that, everyone was happy (including, finally, me!) So there was the beginning of our natural playroom.

building

I began making new toys and raising money through my Etsy shop for quality art supplies and Waldorf inspired books. Soon after I was blessed with a lot of extra work. I believe it was a case of 'when your doing what you were destined to do, doors will open for you where before there were only walls'. I've used this opportunity to be able to afford some beautiful heirloom quality toys that I look forward to enjoying with the children for many years to come.

bed time for some toys while we read our favourite bed time book

Going green was as simple as that. Throughout this time I was worried how parents or children would react to the change but honestly no one said a whole lot about all the toys disappearing and I've had lots of nice comments on things I've made.

yet another creative use for our blocks

There is something so special about watching children build with wooden blocks that my dad made in his back shed. I look at their beautiful creations and I'm thankful that these open ended natural toys can become anything they can imagine. I cant think of anything sweeter than a baby cuddling tight a doll that I hand stitched of natural fibers that are good for her, comforting and warm.

some dolls I made for my daycare

The physical changes of the playroom have been the most dramatic transformation but the changes in the children and in me are the most important. Every day we go outside and we take time to explore and ' just be'.

watering newly planted vegetable seeds

Waldorf is such a shift in lifestyle that inspires me to learn and find joy. I love finding beautiful verses that inspire treasure hunts in the garden. The happiness the children experience when they find a caterpillar that reminds them of a favourite song warms my soul and lets me know how powerful such simple things are to little hearts . I thoroughly enjoy celebrating the seasons and learning more about them so that I can teach the children. I'm still at the beginning of my Waldorf journey and enjoying learning more each day. It fills my heart and soul and I am so glad I made this change.

Oh Karen, your playschool looks totally delightful... I love how you describe your journey into Waldorf as a work in progress... I think that's what it is for most of us. We make small changes that lead to other small changes and before we know it, we are living true to our hearts and delighting in the joys our efforts bring our children. Thank you for sharing you sweet story with us.

My Treasure...

This is my magic crystal ball. I love it more than words can say. Isn't it just amazing... it is a stunningly perfect dandelion inside an orb of solid glass!

I have stared at it for hours, trying to imagine how on earth it was made? The glass is a solid ball with no openings or even remnants of fissures where it was once open. Dandelions are so fragile... one little bump and its wishes would have been scattered into the wind... how did they get it inside the glass without damaging it?

It was given to me by my mother-in-law when we were last in New Zealand. She said that she had been keeping it for me for quite a while... she had seen it and had immediately thought of me... I find it so sweet and wonderful that she thinks of me when she sees a dandelion.

It's often funny little things that touch us the most!

Link up to your own treasure below... I'd love to see what funny little thing touches you :-)

Silk Dyed Easter Eggs

What fun we had using silk scarves to dye Easter eggs! I was totally amazed at the result... such stunning patterns on our eggs. These are heirloom Easter eggs for sure! And so easy to make.

All we needed for this craft was:

* egg shells (here is a tutorial on how to blow the eggs out of the shells)
* pretty silk scarves (we found ours at Goodwill. Silk ties also work... but make sure they are silk)
* 2 Table Spoons of Vinegar
* rubber bands
* a heavy rock

Begin by filling a pot with water, adding 2 table spoons of vinegar and setting it on the stove to boil.

While your water is heating, cut a square from your silk scarf (no... you won't be using it as a scarf again!). The square must be big enough for you to wrap around your egg. Each egg gets its own silk square.

Wrap your egg, making sure the silk scarf square is tight (tight is important) around the egg. Fasten with a rubber band.

Once your eggs are wrapped and tied tightly, use another rubber band to connect them all together and attach the heavy stone.

Put them all in the pot of boiling water. The stone is supposed to weigh your eggs down so that they remain submerged in the water. Alas, our stone wasn't heavy enough, hence the improvisation of all the other kitchen utensils in the pot too in an effort to keep the eggs under the water. LOL!

Boil eggs in water for 10 minutes. Take out of boiling water and allow to cool.

Carefully unwrap your eggs and marvel at how lovely they are.

Mr T LOVED this whole process but the unwrapping was his most favorite part. He sang "Happy Birthday" as he unwrapped the eggs and delighted in each newly-colorful design.

Oh, they are so pretty! So colorful and intricate.

Happy Easter crafting.
Blessings and magic,
Donni

Etsy Treasure Hunt

Each Sunday, we have a Etsy Treasury that has been made especially for us by a guest curator.

Today's treasury was chosen by my Kitty who is 7. It is called Bunnyland. We searched Etsy for 'Spring Toys' and she chose all of the things she'd love to have. They remind her of her beloved bunnies and her friends who also love bunnies. We hope the Easter Bunny has a look at this list as there are some super gorgeous handmade goodies he could bring for her on Easter morning. There are also a few treasures in there for her brother, Mr T... who, I'm sure you know by now, loves dragons.

Click on the photo is you want to see more of an item.

Here is the link to the Etsy Treasury Page.

Here is a link that explains exactly how you can make your very own treasury... anybody can join in the fun... warning - it is addictive :-)

I've added a linkup for those of you who want to make a treasury and share it here. Or, if you have already made one and want to share it... just add your name and the link to your treasury on Etsy in the boxes provided. I can't wait to see what you guys find.

Enjoy Etsy,

Happy Spring!

Hi there...so here's a post on how to celebrate Spring in Twig and Toadstool style.
While I'm definitely not an expert on Waldorf, I do appreciate and utilize some Waldorf methods in our home. We have a nature table, use beautiful natural materials in our crafts, and enjoy storytelling, fingerplays and celebrate many festivals throughout the year.
I'm lucky to live in a part of the world, (Eastern Ontario Canada), where we have 4 distinct seasons. By this time of the year, after a loooooong winter, we are so looking forward to Spring. Soon Mother Nature will come and paint our world from white to green, (well...before the green comes, we do have the unofficial season of mud!)

Start sprouting your wheat grass baskets...they're a beautiful addition to an Easter celebration!
Soak your wheat berries for 24 hours, then sprinkle onto some soil, and cover loosely with some more soil...spritz with water daily and you'll have some lovely greenery for Spring!

Spring is a season of rebirth and renewal. This is a great time as a parent to take some time out to clean and purge your home, and a good time to start some self care. It's also a good time to detox your body and start exercising again...taking care of your own needs will make you a better caregiver to your children.
For children Spring is a season of wonder...new life begins. On our little homestead baby chicks are born, the seedlings are sprouting, and work in the garden begins in ernest!

To help us celebrate this magical season we do alot of crafting...I especially love brightening up our home in these first grey days of Spring.
These crafts could also work with your nature table...you can add these in with more "natural" spring items...eggs, birds nests, special stones, beeswax candles.

Here are some of my favourite Spring crafts

*we make a Garden Goddess every May 1st....she hangs from our Oak tree and watches over our garden all season long.

You can come over to our blog to check out our Spring crafts link. And if you're in the Southern hemisphere and need some Autumn inspiration, you can check out our Autumn craft link!

Here are some of the special days in Spring that your family can celebrate. Don't feel pressured to celebrate them all...pick and choose the ones that speak to your heart.

Here's a sweet little Spring poem...

What the Robin Told
The wind
told the grasses,
And the grasses
told the trees.
The trees
told the bushes,
And the bushes
told the bees.
The bees
told the robin,
And the robin
sang out clear:
Wake up!
Wake up!
Spring is here!

I'd love to know how YOU celebrate Spring too.
Oh , how my heart has been longing for Spring!!!
