Fever in Record Temperature.

Our city had a record temperature set yesterday. The previous record for April 20 was 86 degrees. Yesterday was a whopping 100 degrees! It was unbearably hot! Our house has no air-conditioning and I was uncomfortable... imagine how poor T felt... he is sick with the stomach flue and has had a high fever for two days. Even with regular doses of fever-reducing medicine, it stayed above normal all day.

So, to try to help him feel more comfortable, we spent a lot of time playing with water and getting wet. We played this game often throughout the day. I filled a bucket with water, floated some flowers in it and let T fish for them with our small colanders.
It was just too hot to be outside after 9am and we took this game inside. Water all over the floor but it took T's mind off his discomfort for a good half an hour a go.
We ran the bath with cool water and played bubbles.
We filled the bath with cool water again and painted the walls.
A couple of times I put few drops of food coloring into the bath for a RED swim and then a GEEN swim.

We had Otter Pops in the bath and fished for ice in the bath. Thank Goodness for my bath!!!

By the end of the day I was running out of ideas to entice poor, hot Mr T into the bath and was very happy when 6pm arrived and it was time for bed. So was he, I think!

Today will be just as hot, so any ideas to keep us cool indoors would be much appreciated. T is feeling a little better today. His fever is not quite as high and he has had some toast for breakfast... let's hope we've seen the worst of it.

It's no fun having a fever in 100 degree weather! Poor little guy! It looks like you did a fabulous job keeping him busy and cool. Spray bottles are a great way to keep cool and kids love spraying anything!! Here in the Bay Area we are having 90 degree heat and I do not like it one bit!! But tomorrow it will be in the 70s and cooling everyday with rain for the weekend! Crazy spring weather! Hope T is feeling better and you have a better day!

Wow! That's significantly higher than the last record. I hope things are a bit cooler for you today and that T is feeling better. It can't be fun to run a fever in weather like that.

Looks like we were on the same page. We ate many popsicles, including otter pops, ate a big bowl of ice, went to the beach in the morning and the pool in the evening, had a bath and played in the water in the yard. Man, the house was unbearable!! Hope you are on the mend over there, as I do feel a bit responsible:(

whoa, that is really hot. I think water is great idea. I think eating cool things will help or turn on the fan or just fan yourself and multiple showers. We do that in china when there is no a/c.

I can imagine it was that hot for you; today the expected high is 76 and that's in IDAHO! lol We don't hit the 100+ temps til July usually, and then only for July and August.

One thing we all have for days with high temps (we don't have AC either) is one of those personal spray bottles with a little fan on the end. We keep them filled and in the fridge so they are nice and cold when we want them. A mist of cold water on our bodies with a fan to cool us even more helps a lot. Smoothies are nice. Ice cream is always a treat. OH! And we have one of those Pampered Chef ice shavers. I'm not fond of the sugar flavors to pour over the top, so we don't use those. But we all love to shave a block of ice just to add to our water. Kind of makes it fun. Plus, on days when we just can't stand it, we wet a washcloth, wring it out well, pop it in the freezer for about 5 minutes, then lay it over our feet. For some reason if our feet are cool, the rest of our bodies feel cooler. That's all I can come up with off the top of my head. Hope he feels better SOON. Must be awful to have a temperature along with a super hot day!

100! I hate really hot weather but one day of it would be kind of nice.

I'm a little late in reading this...I hope everyone is feeling better!

To add to Tammy's suggestions: when my kids are uncomfortable with a fever, I do lemon water on their feet and calves. Sometimes just a quick squirt of lemon onto a damp (lukewarm) washcloth rubbed on their legs, other times I do "lemon socks" with fresh lemon.

The idea is that the fever is beneficial in processing the illness, so we don't want to suppress it either with fever reducing medicine or with too much external cooling (or Otter Pops!). Lemon helps bring the fever out of the head (which is what makes it uncomfortable) and down into the legs where the heat can disperse more easily. It's an anthroposophical remedy that i really recommend.

I've written about this in more detail here or I would be happy to discuss further here or in email!
